A man had a son who was wild about baseball.
One summer he took the boy to see every major league team play. The summer long trip was a great bonding experience.
When they returned home, the father returned to work, and was asked how his extended time off was. When he related what he did on his vacation, he was asked “Do you like baseball that much?”
“No, not really” he replied, “but I like my son that much.”

Ah, priorities. How good is it when we have them in proper perspective…
It’s like heaven. You wanna have a catch?
Play ball!
John, Love your post. Our children grow up so quickly … don’t blink, you might miss something important. I coached my daughter’s softball teams and enjoyed every precious moment. This post is a good reminder to take time to have fun and be with our families. Take nothing for granted. Baseball opener is this week!
Kathy, you are soooo right … I have a 23 year old, and I can’t believe how fast he grew up!
Good to see you here!
Hi John:
My son and I still PLAY catch (Kostner had it wrong). He’s 32 and I’m an old man but its still great. I’m looking forward to playing catch with my two grandsons.
Go SOX.
Dan Murray
Dan, I had a pretty good day, a pretty productive meeting with an executive team today, but I gotta tell you this is the coolest thing I’ve heard today … Not exactly sure how Kostner got it wrong, but you are doing it right! It is very cool that you play catch with your 32 year old son … and the expectation of playing catch with your grandsons … special, to be sure!
Oh, and by the way … go CUBS!
(Being a Cubs fan is an exercise in managing expectations …!)
And my beloved Cubs are off to the races . . . can we add Carlos Marmol to the list of players that need to be traded? Hope your Opening Day brought you a sense of happiness . . . in spite of the “Cubs being the Cubs” I enjoyed yesterday!
BTW very nice post.
I took my father on two father-son vacations in the last two years. One trip was to Washington DC and the other was a NYC-Boston-Niagra Falls trip. On this last trip, we stopped off at Cooperstown for the day.
Your post reminded me that I need to ask Dad to do this again.
Thanks John!
Enjoy the rebuilding year. I know I will!

Hi Erik … Yes, I was enjoying opening day until, well, gosh darn it! it’s like we have our own version of groundhog day …As for Marmol, I’d ride him just a little while longer, but I must tell ya I’m not sure Kerry Wood has any miles left in him … I am not so sure I can stay engaged during the rebuilding. Too frustrating.
I remember you Facebook chronicling your awesome father-son vacations … and it’s pretty cool that the post was the reminder to get planning the next one!
